ecomaine recognizes the Friends of the Scarborough Library. The Friends of the Scarborough Library has been selected to receive a 2016 ecomaine eco-Excellence Award for their good work at supporting the "reuse" aspect of the waste hierarchy. The Friends voluntary efforts in conjunction with the Friends Book Sale have not only raised important operating funds for the library, but have helped put to reuse more than 20,000 books each year—a great model of the effectiveness, increased awareness, community impact, and ease of replication the ecomaine awards program spotlights!

Nominating Committee Proposes Additional Board Member: The Nominating Committee is pleased to put forth Mrs. Karen Lavigne's name as a member of the Friend's Board. Karen is a relative new comer to our town and the Friend's organization. This last year she helped with the Book Sale and scooping ice cream at the end of the children's Summer Reading Program. Currently she is a member of the Program Committee. She is anxious to become more involved in the community. She is currently employed at IDEXX. Her nomination will be voted on at the Annual Meeting on October 18th.
Friends Seek Board Members; Change Meeting Times: The Board of the Friends is looking for some people who would like to become more involved with the Friends by becoming a member of our Board. We voted to change our meetings to evenings in hopes of attracting a larger demographic. Our Board meetings will now be on the second Thursdays of the month at 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the Library. We would love to hear from some of you who have questions about the Board, what we do, and how you can become a Board member. Email us via the email contact at the bottom of the page.

Sun Shines on Friends Book Sale: During the annual 4-day event in June, hundreds came to the Library looking for the perfect summer read! With more than 25,000 donated books and audio-visual titles to choose from, readers of all ages found at least one book by their favorite author. These funds help support the Library in various ways, including adding to the collection, funding the Children's and Teen's Summer Reading Program, and supporting free passes to Maine cultural institutions, as well as the Friends' programs. Once again, unsold items were donated to non-profit organizations and Goodwill, who cordially picked them up for us. Read more> >

"Wildlife Encounters" at the Wentworth Middle School: an estmated 300 enthusiastic children and adults got to see some incredible species of Ambassador Animals during a program at the Scarborough Middle School! Most of the animals that made an appearance are rescues that were injured, abandoned or displaced... and they all have their own personal stories! This is just one example of how the Friends work with the Library Youth Services staff to provide out-of-the-ordinary experiences for children.
Scarborough Library Fundraiser Announced: Portland Pie is helping the Library celebrate National Library Week (April 12-18, 2015) with a special fundraising event! Portland Pie Company created "Portland Pie Cares" to help raise awareness and funds for local non-profits and charities. It's their way of "giving back" to the communities they serve. On the evening of Thursday, April 16th, $1 from every pizza (dine-in or carry-out) purchased from Portland Pie's Scarborough location will support our Library! Mark April 16th on your calendar, and join us for dinner at Portland Pie's Scarborough location on 400 Expedition Dr. (near Cabela's). And if you can't join us, consider ordering a pizza to take home! Follow the Library Facebook page for more details as the date approaches!
