Friends donations are used by the Library to purchase books and other materials for its collection. The Friends also funds an annual Summer Reading Program for children.  By working closely with the Library Director, the Board can respond quickly to requests for volunteer assistance and for funds to cover non-budgeted Library expenses. Our work is coordinated with the Library's Board of Trustees primarily through a Friends board member who serves as liaison.

We also provide discount passes to the Children’s Museum of Maine, the Maine Wildlife Park, selected Maine State Parks, and the Portland Museum of Art. Eligible cardholders may borrow passes at the Library circulation desk.

You can support the Friends:

  • Volunteer to help a committee
  • Speak at a Friend's program
  • Attend a program
  • Serve on the Friends Board
  • Help at the book sale
  • Donate used books, etc.

Quotable: "Many books in the Library have a book plate on the inside cover indicating that it was purchased with funds donated by the Friends or in memory of someone who truly loved books and the Library."
